Recent revelations by young Edward Snowden have allowed us to believe that the greatest espionage practised in the history of humankind is “Made in USA”. They, who place security above freedom and money above human rights, poke their noses into the life of persons, governments, businesses and institutions.
The US government, through its National Security Agency (NSA), spied (or still spies?) on president Dilma and Petrobrás. They certainly have done and will do much more.
This was not news to me. I know, from official documents obtained in the National Archive (Habeas Data), that I was monitored by spies (known as “arapongas”) of the Brazilian military regime between June 1964, when they first arrested me, and 1992 – seven years after the dictatorship ended!
In August 2003, when I worked for the government, phone tapping was discovered in president Lula’s office. Government information is worth a fortune. If share holders and account holders know, beforehand, that the Central Bank will decree the bankruptcy of a bank, this is priceless. Those who knew that president Collor would confiscate all Brazilian savings accounts must still be laughing at the crowds who were taken by surprise then.

The reason the Cold War did not flare up is merely because the Soviet Union spied on the US, just as the US spied on the Soviet Union. The spy on one side was frequently exchanged for another who served the enemy. There is a reason why Russia decided to grant asylum to Snowden. He knows a lot about Yankee espionage.
In the age of typewriters it was impossible to learn the content of a message, unless a copy or a photograph was obtained. Now, all electronic means, from computers to mobiles, can be “x-rayed” by US security services. “Big Brother” knows everything that happens in our home.
Even if the White House asks pardon of president Dilma, it does not mean that the NSA will stop tracking government computers and learning with whom the president spoke and what was said, or when. Information is power – subjecting us to the interests of the most powerful empire that has existed in the history of mankind.
Only one nation has managed to dodge US espionage: Cuba. This irritates the White House so much that, against all principles of Law, it keeps five Cuban heroes in prison when their mission was to avoid terrorist acts being planned under Uncle Sam’s nose.
I close here with a question which will not go away: why, instead of attacking the Syrian people, do the USA not bomb chemical weapons factories such as Combined Systems of Pennsylvania? The Vietnamese victims who were struck, killed or maimed by “agent orange” spread by the US Armed Forces during the Vietnam war will tell you.
